Jill was an enthusiastic and very competent dinghy sailor (although her enthusiasm did dip a little in the winter months). In the 1970s we had two Mirror dinghies in the family which we raced very keenly and successfully at Reading Sailing Club, with Sunday results quite often being “first J Petty, second J Petty”. Typically my father (with Hilary crewing) triumphed in very light winds (sneaky tactics) and heavy winds (extra weight) but my mother (with me crewing) tended to come out on top in middling conditions. Not only did we race locally, we also popped the two boats on one trailer and travelled to open meetings, where we were probably the only family with all members taking part!
The “Ladies Plate” – in common with many sailing clubs in the 1970s our club held an annual ladies race. This usually involved various women and girls moving to the back end of the boat and holding the tiller to nominally steer whilst the man of the boat did nearly everything else and issued instructions. How different it was in the Petty household – as already noted Jill was an accomplished dinghy sailor and used to winning races on her own terms, so for the ladies race she just took one of us girls, went out there and won it. The trophy was a rather nice oval tray which was very useful for serving food - so for several years we ensured it stayed in the Petty household.
Sadly we can't find any photos from those days, but here is one from the 1950s when she sailed at Arun Yacht club.
Later the family took up windsurfing and we do have some photos from then.
